The Word - Hated
Psalms 50:17
Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
Some reaction to the word of God is not possitive. Some react by ignoring the word,
casting the words aside and some even becoming violent to those who preach the word.
Isaiah 5:24
Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their
root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast
away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
The results of casting away the law of the Lord is to be destroyed and cast away as
dust. The way of the ungodly shall perish. The word makes alive, without the word there is
death and destruction.
Isaiah 30
12 Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and
trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:
13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a
high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
14 And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces;
he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take
fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.
More results of despising the word and trusting in other things. There is safety in having
a genuine love for the word. To be an eager hearer and doer of the word is to be wise. I'm
sure the Lord takes great delight in those who love to hear His word.
Jeremiah 6
10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is
uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a
reproach; they have no delight in it.
11 Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it
out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the
husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.
It makes the Lord angry when people despise and have no delight in the word. He gave his
word to save and bring hope. He gave his word to show us how to live in peace. He gave his
word to guide us in all our decisions in this life. He gave us so much and how it grieves
him to see so many ignore and even hate his word.
Jeremiah 8
9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the
word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?
10 Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall
inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to
covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
We see more and more the results of rejecting the word and the wisdom of that word. Those
who think themselves wise in this world and reject the word are in reality very stupid.
True wisdom is in knowing and doing the word of God.
Jeremiah 36
23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with
the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was
consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
24 Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his
servants that heard all these words.
Even though many have tried to get rid of the word, it remains. Just because men reject it
does not make it null and void. The word will remain forever and those that reject it will
perish.
Zechariah 7
12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the
words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore
came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.
13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried,
and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:
How sad to keep rejecting the word until the day comes when you cry and the Lord rejects
and does not hear anymore. Each time the word is rejected the heart becomes harder and
harder toward God. The person who has heard the word over and over again and has rejected
it is harder to get saved than one who hears for the first time.
Mark 7
13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have
delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Another way of despising the word is by substituting the word with the words of man or the
interpretation of man. To change the original meaning of the word into something manmade
is the same as hating the word and rejecting its original truth. We must be careful not to
add to or take away from the original truth. The bible should not be used to deceive a
person into believing something that is contrary to the original meaning. We have no more
right to change the meaning of the bible than we have to change any other writer's work.
How would you like to work hard on writing something to convey a certain message and have
someone in later years take your work and change it into meaning something entirely
different from your original intent. Instead of saying what you wanted to say, they use
your work to say what they want to say.
