Word of Jesus Part 60

John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

Their hearts were no doubt troubled because of being warned that He was almost ready to return to the Father who sent Him to us. Perhaps at times they also hoped He would set up His earthly kingdom at this time. The Messiah the Jews awaited was not expected to be someone who would die for sins but rather rule and reign forever. Much has to happen before that event occurs but it will occur. First a sinless offering had to be made in order for believers to be qualified to be born again, receive the Holy Spirit and inherit eternal life. The coming kingdom will not have sin within it so we have to be cleansed from sin in this life. Since we can't do this on our own we needed help from the only one who could save us from sin.

John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

That is what Jesus is doing right now to welcome us at His second coming.

John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

This is the hope of each and every believer whether male, female, rich, poor, child or adult.

John 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
John 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Again we repeat many times that there is no other way of salvation than Jesus Christ. If there had been another way, Jesus would not have had to die on the cross. He died by His own choice. He could have escaped into Samaria or any other place and not be taken and crucified.

Jesus and faith in Jesus is what will save us from sin and grant us eternal life. No ritual, baptism, communion, ordinance, prayers for the dead, praying to saints, praying to Mary, doing great works, or even feeding the poor can save the soul apart from faith in Jesus Christ. Faith alone in Jesus Christ is what will save us from sin and cause us to be "born again" by the spirit of God. There is no other way. We must turn from sin and turn to Christ to be saved.

We have to believe He is the Son of God. We can't believe that He was just a good prophet or a good man. We have to believe He is the Son of God sent to save us from sin.

He is the only way. He is the only one who can take away the penalty for our sins and He only has the power to grant eternal life to as many as receive Him.

John14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
John 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

This He said to emphasize the fact that Jesus was God that came into the flesh. He was so much a part of God that they were one in unity. There is a Father and there is a Son but they are so closely united that they are considered to be one God. The Holy Ghost is also part of that unity.

He is speaking here to the Jews mainly and was trying to convince them that He was the one God sent. To receive Him is to receive the Father. To believe in Him is to believe in God. He was not saying that He Jesus was the Father and that the Father was Jesus. That leads to confusion. Stephen when he was stoned to death saw Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father. There is a Father and a Son but to believe in one is to believe in the other. If we deny the Son we also deny God the Father for the Father sent Him to save us from sin.

John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
John 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

It seems as if we don't have to understand everything perfectly to be saved but just to simply believe in Him for salvation.

John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

The works that Jesus did while He walked the earth are to continue in those that believe until He returns a second time. The preaching of the gospel, healing of the sick and other things Jesus did were to continue.

John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

This is true but we a qualification. He that believes in me (Jesus). Believing means more than believing He once existed. To believe in something is to live by what we believe. We can't say we believe in something and ignore that something our entire life.
Believing is an action. It is faith bringing forth fruit. We can't say we believe and do not the things that He taught.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

If we ignore His commandments, we can't say that we love Him.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

To those that obey Him is the promise of the Holy Spirit to abide with us forever.

Act 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
Act 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
Act 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

The Holy Spirit will not come to one that has not repented of sin and accepted Jesus Christ.

John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
John 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

Jesus went back to Heaven but sent the Holy Spirit to abide with believers so that they are comforted and never alone.

John 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

The Holy Spirit bears witness of all truth and when we receive the Holy Spirit we know that Jesus is who He said He was.

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
John 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

If someone does not keep the word of God, it is proof that the Holy Spirit is not abiding in that one. If we do not keep His sayings we do not love Him.

This is why it is so important to read and understand the words of Jesus.

John 14:25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

This will happen many times as we walk with the Lord. I remember many times I would be troubled by something and a verse would pop into my mind that makes things very clear.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The peace that comes from the Lord cannot be explained or compared to world peace. The peace that comes from God is not a false peace or temporary truce. It is something that can take place even if there is trouble all around us.

John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

We see here that Jesus esteemed His Father greater than Himself. To reject Jesus is the reject the Father of all life, existence and salvation.

John 14:29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

He was preparing them for the hard time coming when He was to be crucified and taken from them.

John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

Prince of the world is Satan who was given the power to cause Jesus to be crucified. Jesus allowed this of His own free will, God permitted this to fulfill the way of salvation for anyone who would believe.

John 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

Jesus was the perfect example of all obedience and love. Because of Him we do not have to suffering the torments of hell for eternity. We can enter into eternal life without sin and be with God forever.
